Nigeria Launches 215,000 MAMA Kits to Combat Maternal Deaths

On 14 September 2026, the Federal Government of Nigeria launched an initiative to combat the alarming statistic that Nigeria accounts for nearly 39% of global maternal deaths. This initiative, part of the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII) by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, includes the distribution of 215,000 MAMA kits, 40,000 maternal food-support packs, and 40,000 sets of newborn clothing.

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu emphasized the importance of this program in ensuring that every Nigerian child has a healthy start and that no woman loses her life during childbirth. The initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda on Health and aims to enhance the use of antenatal, delivery, and postnatal services, particularly in underserved communities.

This rollout follows an earlier distribution of 110,000 kits in 2025. Mrs. Tinubu called for collaboration from various stakeholders to ensure the support reaches vulnerable communities effectively.
