Nigeria's Correctional System Reform Through PPP Initiatives

The Nigerian government is focused on reforming its correctional system through public-private partnerships (PPP) to enhance rehabilitation and skill acquisition for inmates, rather than merely incarcerating them. This commitment was reiterated by Dr.

Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, and Dr. Magdalen Ajani, the Permanent Secretary, during a stakeholder engagement in Abuja.

They highlighted the importance of PPP in achieving the vision for a modern correctional system that equips inmates with skills to reintegrate into society. Sylvest Ndidi Nwakuch from the Nigerian Correctional Service noted the ongoing reforms, which include 18 farm centers and 10 cottage industries across the country, aimed at enhancing agricultural activities.

Hon. Chinedu Ogah, Chairman of the House Committee on Reformatori Institut, emphasized the need for greater accountability and innovation in the correctional facilities, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's broader reform agenda.

The initiative aims to reduce recidivism and enhance community safety through sustainable development and partnerships.
