Nigeria's Plan to Transform Prisons into Agricultural Hubs

The Nigerian government, represented by Minister of Interior Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has announced a strategic initiative to convert correctional centers into agricultural hubs.

This plan, revealed during a stakeholders' roundtable in Abuja, emphasizes public-private partnerships to enhance rehabilitation and reintegration programs for inmates. The initiative marks a significant shift from traditional incarceration models to a reform-driven approach aligned with global best practices, focusing on skill acquisition and economic productivity to reduce reoffending rates.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo highlighted the need for collaboration with the private sector to unlock the full potential of correctional facilities, which currently operate 18 farm centers across 10,000 hectares nationwide.

The agricultural projects will include various sectors such as fisheries, poultry, and piggery, aiming to empower inmates with contemporary farming techniques and lifelong skills. Organizations like Hope Behind Bars Africa are already implementing programs in several correctional centers, focusing on food security and equipping inmates with agricultural entrepreneurial skills.
