Nigeria Supports AU Reforms on Peace and Security

Nigeria has expressed its support for the African Union's (AU) institutional reforms focused on peace, security, and governance. This endorsement was made by Vice President Kashim Shettima during the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Shettima submitted Nigeria's position on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, highlighting the need for stronger cooperation among international financial institutions and the private sector. He emphasized Nigeria's commitment to implementing agreements aimed at establishing a rapid response maritime security force in the Gulf of Guinea and addressing the proliferation of small arms and light weapons.

Furthermore, Shettima noted Nigeria's support for reforms in the United Nations Security Council, particularly regarding democratic governance. He also welcomed the AU's decision to lift the suspension of Gabon and Guinea from the union and called for greater investment in agricultural value chains, particularly for smallholder farmers, women, and youth.
