Nigeria Advocates for Nuclear Disarmament at UN Meeting

At a high-level United Nations meeting on nuclear disarmament in New York, Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, called for the complete elimination of nuclear weapons. This meeting coincided with the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons during the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly.

Ibrahim stated that Nigeria does not possess nuclear weapons and does not consider them necessary for national security. He emphasized that lasting global security should be based on dialogue, international law, and multilateral cooperation.

The Tinubu administration is committed to international efforts for a nuclear-free world and urges nuclear-weapon states to fulfill their disarmament obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. Ibrahim also highlighted Africa's success in establishing a nuclear-weapon-free zone through the Treaty of Pelindaba, showcasing the continent's contribution to global nuclear disarmament.
