Nigeria's UN Envoy Calls for Global Nuclear Disarmament

On September 30, Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, demanded the complete elimination of nuclear weapons at a high-level UN General Assembly meeting in New York, commemorating the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. Ibrahim stated that humanity cannot rely on nuclear weapons for security and emphasized that Nigeria does not possess nuclear weapons, has never pursued a nuclear-weapons program, and has no intention of developing one.

He asserted that global security should be based on dialogue, international law, and multilateral cooperation. Ibrahim reiterated President Bola Tinubu's commitment to international efforts for a nuclear-free world and urged nuclear-weapon states to fulfill their disarmament obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

He highlighted the risks associated with the modernization of nuclear arsenals and called for the irreversible and verifiable elimination of nuclear weapons.
