Nigeria Reaffirms No Nuclear Weapons at UN Assembly

During the 108th Plenary Meeting of the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Jimoh Ibrahim, Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, declared that Nigeria does not own nuclear weapons and has never pursued their development. Speaking on behalf of the President, Ibrahim reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to eliminating nuclear-weapon testing globally.

He raised concerns regarding Article 2(7) of the UN Charter, advocating that it should not protect countries conducting nuclear tests. Ibrahim highlighted the role of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission in overseeing nuclear activities and regulatory frameworks.

He noted Nigeria's collaboration with major powers, including Russia, China, France, and South Korea, to support international nuclear cooperation. Ibrahim aligned Nigeria's stance with the African Group and celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), calling for continued efforts against nuclear testing.

He also referenced a previous commitment by Nigeria's Vice President to strengthen collaboration with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation.
