Nigeria Launches Solar Hybrid Project at Gowon University

Nigeria has officially commissioned a solar hybrid project at Gowon University, aimed at improving electricity supply for teaching, research, laboratory operations, and digital services. This initiative is part of Phase Two of the Energising Education Programme (EEP), executed by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) under the World Bank-funded Nigeria Electrification Project.

The facility will support nearly 40,000 students and over 3,500 staff at the university. Minister of Power, Joseph O.

Tegbe, emphasized the significance of reliable electricity for education and human capital development, urging for effective operation and maintenance of the facility. Abba Aliyu, Managing Director of REA, noted that the EEP has provided renewable energy infrastructure to 22 federal universities and three affiliated teaching hospitals, delivering over 100 megawatts of clean energy to more than 600,000 students and 50,000 academic and administrative staff nationwide.

The project also includes a Renewable Energy Workshop and Training Centre for practical training in renewable energy technologies.
