Power Minister Tegbe Launches 3MW Solar Plant at University

On September 18, 2026, Joseph Tegbe, the Minister of Power, commissioned a 3MW captive solar hybrid power plant at Yakubu Gowon University in Abuja. This facility, developed by the Rural Electrification Agency under Phase II of the Energizing Education Programme, combines a 3.3MWp solar array with 3MW of AC output and 2MWh of battery storage.

It is designed to provide cleaner and more reliable electricity to the university's 58,726 students, reducing reliance on diesel generators and lowering electricity costs. The project also includes the installation of 388 streetlights to enhance campus security.

Tegbe emphasized that the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, focusing on improving citizens' lives through electricity investments. He urged the university community to protect the new infrastructure and announced plans for a nationwide electricity complaints call center to create jobs for young Nigerians.

A joint team is also working to prevent vandalism of electricity infrastructure.
