Nigeria Customs Chief Adeniyi Re-elected WCO Chairperson

On July 3, 2026, during the 147th and 148th sessions of the World Customs Organisation (WCO) Council in Brussels, Belgium, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu praised Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), for his unanimous re-election as Chairperson of the WCO. Tinubu noted that this re-election reflects the significant progress made under Adeniyi's leadership and Nigeria's growing influence in global customs administration.

Adeniyi's tenure has been characterized by initiatives that have enhanced revenue generation, strengthened border security, and facilitated legitimate trade. Three months prior, on April 24, the WCO acknowledged Nigeria Customs' efforts in promoting faster and safer trade in Africa through the presentation of Nigeria’s Time Release Study (TRS).

Ian Saunders, the WCO Secretary-General, highlighted TRS as a reform that boosts trade competitiveness and national safety. Adeniyi's leadership has focused on implementing the Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) and modernizing customs operations, contributing to Nigeria's economic development.
