Nigeria Endorses AU Reforms for Peace and Security

Nigeria has officially endorsed the African Union's (AU) institutional reforms focused on peace and security, as articulated by President Bola Tinubu during the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The reforms aim to strengthen democratic institutions and enhance cooperation with international financial institutions and the private sector.

President Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, highlighted Nigeria's commitment to implementing the agreement to establish a standby force capable of providing rapid maritime security responses in the Gulf of Guinea. He noted the need to address the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, which are significant contributors to armed conflict in the region.

Furthermore, Nigeria supports the AU's decision to lift the suspension of Gabon and Guinea from the union, welcoming their return to active participation. Tinubu also reiterated the importance of a coordinated approach to Africa's mining resources and the need for local manufacturing and technological development.
