Nigeria and EU Discuss Security and Raw Materials Partnership

On Monday, a meeting took place in Lagos between President Bola Tinubu and a delegation led by Kaja Kallas, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. The discussions centered on deepening cooperation between Nigeria and the European Union, particularly in the areas of security and critical raw materials.

Kallas emphasized the importance of countries adhering to an international rules-based system to navigate global uncertainties. Specific areas for collaboration identified include investment, trade in critical raw materials, and cybersecurity.

The meeting comes at a time when the EU is seeking to diversify its sources of critical raw materials, particularly in light of the growing global competition for essential technologies and renewable energy manufacturing. Nigeria is noted to possess significant deposits of lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements, which are crucial for electric vehicle batteries and solar panels.

The discussions also included Nigeria's traditional oil and gas exports, which have historically dominated its relationship with the EU.
