Nigeria Secures Fourth at 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships

Nigeria hosted the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships at Rugby School Nigeria, Eko Atlantic City, Lagos, becoming the first African nation to do so. The event showcased Nigeria's resilience and organizational excellence, culminating in a fourth-place finish for the host nation.

The standout performer was 17-year-old Oghenegaren Osievwa-Thompson, who made history by winning Nigeria’s first-ever international gold medal in fencing. The Nigerian wheelchair squad also excelled, contributing significantly to the medal tally with a majority of the silver and bronze medals.

Overall, Team Nigeria secured one gold, five silver, and 18 bronze medals. India emerged as the champions with 25 gold, 20 silver, and 18 bronze medals, while England and Wales followed in second and third places, respectively.

Bukola Olopade, Director General of the National Sports Commission, praised the Nigeria Fencing Federation, led by Adeyinka Samuel, for their efforts and pledged continued government support. Samuel, newly elected as the first African president of the Commonwealth Fencing Federation, expressed gratitude and commitment to advancing fencing in Nigeria.
