Esiovwa-Thompson Wins Nigeria's First Commonwealth Fencing Gold

Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson, a 16-year-old fencer, achieved a historic milestone by winning Nigeria's first-ever gold medal in the men's U-23 epee at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships. The event took place at Rugby School Nigeria in Atlantic City, Lagos.

Esiovwa-Thompson demonstrated exceptional skill, defeating three Indian opponents en route to the final. He topped Pool 4 without a loss, earning a bye into the round of 16, where he triumphed over South Africa's Karabo Mathobela 15-7.

In the quarterfinals, he overwhelmed India's Shivaansh Kapoor 15-2, and in the semifinals, he held his nerve against Ashwini Shaurya, winning 15-11. In the final, he faced Asian champion Lokesh Vemani, defeating him 15-6.

Esiovwa-Thompson expressed his joy at winning in Nigeria, stating, “I’m just happy that I’m in Nigeria. I won in Nigeria in front of the Nigerians, in front of my grandma and grandpa.”.
