Nigeria Urged to Boost Exports with AGOA Extension

The United States President Donald Trump signed the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, 2027, extending the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) through December 31, 2028. This extension allows Nigeria and 31 other sub-Saharan African countries to maintain duty-free access to the U.S. market.

The Nigerian-American Chamber of Commerce (NACC), through its Deputy President Ehi Braimah and National President Alhaji Sheriff Balogun, urged Nigeria to leverage this opportunity to enhance non-oil exports and address domestic challenges that hinder access to the U.S. market. Balogun emphasized the need for Nigeria to diversify its exports into sectors such as agriculture, textiles, processed foods, and manufactured goods.

The NACC called for coordinated efforts among the Federal Government, private sector, and state governments to tackle structural challenges, including logistics and compliance issues. They also encouraged engagement with Washington on trade concerns and advocated for stronger U.S.-Nigeria commercial partnerships.
