Nigeria and IEA Sign Deal to Boost Energy Data and Policy

Nigeria and the International Energy Agency (IEA) signed a Joint Work Programme aimed at enhancing energy data development and strengthening evidence-based policymaking and investment in the energy sector. The agreement was announced by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications.

Vice President Kashim Shettima described Nigeria's admission as an IEA Association country as a significant milestone, providing access to the agency’s technical expertise and global energy networks. The signing ceremony took place on Thursday in Abuja, attended by Nigerian officials and a delegation from the IEA.

IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol noted that Nigeria's admission followed extensive assessments and was unanimously approved by the IEA Governing Board, which includes major economies. The partnership aims to support Nigeria's energy ambitions, improve energy security, and attract investment, with Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Ekperikpe Ekpo highlighting the importance of reliable energy data for decision-making.
