Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment to Paris Agreement Goals

The Federal Government of Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to the Paris Agreement and a low-carbon, climate-resilient development pathway, targeting net-zero emissions by 2060. Dr. Tenioye Majekodunmi, the Director General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), made this statement during the Justice and Energy Transition Roundtable organized by the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Foundation in collaboration with the Ford Foundation on Tuesday at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.

The Paris Agreement, adopted on December 12, 2015, aims to limit global temperature rise to well below 2°C. Dr. Majekodunmi stressed that climate action must facilitate development, expand energy access, create jobs, and improve living standards.

She urged the private sector, development partners, and civil society to collaborate with governments to transition from commitments to implementation. Additionally, she called for innovative financing mechanisms to turn climate ambitions into investable opportunities, emphasizing that Nigeria's energy transition must align with its development needs.
