Nigeria Launches First International Nautical Cartography Program

Nigeria has achieved a landmark recognition by launching its first internationally certified nautical cartography program, as announced during the 49th meeting of the International Board on Standards of Competence for Hydrographic Surveyors and Nautical Cartographers (IBSC). This program, overseen by Olumid Fadahunsi, Chief Executive Officer of the National Hydrographic Agency (NHA), signifies Nigeria's emergence as a significant player in the global hydrographic community.

The certification aligns with international best practices in hydrography and maritime safety, enhancing Nigeria's technical capacity and intellectual competence. The establishment of this program follows the enactment of legislation in 2022 that positioned the NHA as the central authority for hydrographic and oceanographic operations in Nigeria.

This initiative aims to strengthen navigational safety, improve maritime cooperation, and deepen local expertise in ocean data management. The recognition places Nigeria among a select group of nations with accredited hydrographic training programs, unlocking broader opportunities for professional exchange and collaboration across Africa's maritime sector.
