Nigeria Launches $2bn Digital Economy Research Initiative

On a recent date, Nigeria launched a $2 billion Digital Economy Research Cluster to foster innovation and strengthen its digital infrastructure. The initiative, spearheaded by Dr.

Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, aims to bridge the gap in digital economy research and enhance the country's contribution to the global digital economy. The project will be financed by the World Bank and will involve universities forming research consortia to deliver high-quality, policy-relevant research across six thematic clusters.

These clusters will focus on key areas such as connectivity, access to digital public infrastructure, government services, human capital skills, job creation in the digital economy, consumer trust, and the protection of emerging technologies like AI. Dr.

Tunji Alausa emphasized the need for Nigerian universities to evolve beyond theoretical learning to nurture innovative entrepreneurs capable of solving real-world problems. The initiative is expected to transform lives and position Nigeria competitively on a global scale.
