Nigeria Launches National Tertiary Education Ranking System

Nigeria is launching a national tertiary education ranking system, as announced by Minister of Education Tunji Alausa after a meeting with the Ranking Advisory Committee (NURAC) and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). This initiative follows the inclusion of 24 Nigerian universities in the Times Higher Education 2026 Rankings.

The new ranking framework aims to reflect Nigeria's educational environment and priorities, rather than relying solely on international assessments. For the first time, polytechnics and Colleges of Education will be included in the rankings.

NURAC will be renamed the Nigerian Tertiary Education Ranking Advisory Committee (NTERAC), led by Prof. Peter Okebukola. Participation will be mandatory for all public and private tertiary institutions, with Vice-Chancellors, Rectors, and Provosts urged to cooperate.

The national ranking system will be integrated into the Nigeria Education Data Initiative (NEDI) platform, enhancing data collection and reporting to improve the global competitiveness of Nigerian universities. TETFund will provide financial and institutional support for this initiative.
