Nigeria Dominates Day One at Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

On the opening day of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, Team Nigeria showcased a remarkable performance, securing two gold and three silver medals, placing second on the medals table behind Australia. Captain Folashade Oluwafemiayo led the charge by breaking the world record in the Women’s heavyweight para-powerlifting event with a lift of 134.8kg, earning gold.

Rita Ferdinand followed closely, lifting 128.2kg to claim silver, marking a Nigerian one-two finish. Earlier, Esther Nworgu won Nigeria's first gold in the women’s lightweight category, lifting 123kg, while compatriot Esther Oyema secured silver.

Veteran Roland Ezuruike added a silver in the men’s lightweight category. Additionally, Nigeria made history in 3×3 basketball, achieving its first victory in the discipline with a 21-17 win over the Cayman Islands.

National Sports Commission Director-General Bukola Olopade praised the team's spirit and determination, emphasizing the importance of staying focused for the journey ahead.
