Nigeria's Youth Must Be Prepared for Leadership Roles

On Tuesday, Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, asserted that Nigeria must no longer view young people merely as "leaders of tomorrow." He emphasized the need for deliberate preparation of youth for leadership roles during the unveiling of the Leadership for Equity, Advocacy and Development Fellowship, organized by the Gender Mobile Initiative at the National Assembly in Abuja. Abbas, represented by Kafilat Ogbara, Chairman of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, stated that Nigeria's democratic future relies on cultivating a generation of ethical and competent leaders.

He highlighted the importance of understanding government operations and using political office for societal improvement. Abbas also reaffirmed the House's commitment to enhancing women's political participation through proposed constitutional amendments for reserved seats.

The LEAD Fellowship aims to train 1,000 student leaders from 10 tertiary institutions over 18 months in ethical leadership and public service, addressing the gap between student leadership and governance opportunities.
