Fayemi Advocates for Citizens' Welfare in Economic Reforms

Kayode Fayemi, the former Governor of Ekiti State and ex-Minister of Solid Minerals, called for a fundamental reevaluation of Nigeria's economic and foreign policy strategies during an interview on Arise Television. He warned that Nigeria's global ambitions cannot be sustained without addressing the hardships, poverty, and insecurity faced by millions.

Fayemi noted that the debate over fuel subsidy has become more political than economic, stressing that citizens are primarily concerned about the impact of government policies on their daily lives. While he does not oppose the removal of the fuel subsidy, he criticized the failure of past administrations to protect vulnerable Nigerians from its immediate effects.

Fayemi mentioned a safety-net strategy developed by a technical committee, which included representatives from the federal government, state governors, the World Bank, and organized labor, aimed at mitigating the anticipated hardships from subsidy removal. He emphasized that economic reforms should focus on improving citizens' living conditions and warned that governments risk losing public confidence if they ask citizens to endure hardship without visible benefits.
