Nigeria Secures Fourth at Commonwealth Fencing Championships

Nigeria concluded the Commonwealth Fencing Championships in fourth place, securing a total of one gold, five silver, and 18 bronze medals. The standout performer was 17-year-old Oghenegaren Osievwa-Thompson, who made history as the first Nigerian to win an international gold medal in fencing.

The country's debut wheelchair fencing team also contributed significantly to the medal tally, enhancing Nigeria's overall performance. India dominated the championships, finishing at the top of the medal table with 25 gold, 20 silver, and 18 bronze medals.

England and Wales followed in second and third place, respectively, while South Africa rounded out the top five. The championships, held in Lagos, attracted athletes from 20 countries, marking a significant milestone for Nigerian and African fencing.

At the closing ceremony, Bukonla Olopade, Director-General of the National Sports Commission, commended the Nigeria Fencing Federation, led by Adeyinka Samuel, for successfully hosting the event.
