Donald Duke: Nigeria's Democracy is a Facade

Donald Duke, the presidential candidate for the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), expressed his concerns regarding Nigeria's political and economic state during an interview on the Policy Without Politics (PWP) podcast. He stated that Nigeria is not genuinely democratic, describing the current situation as a facade, and lamented that Nigerians are worse off now than they were in 1999, despite 26 years of constitutional democracy.

Duke pointed out that Nigeria's annual budget has remained around $25 billion since the early 1980s, despite a significant population increase from approximately 70 million to between 200 and 250 million. He emphasized that the naira's devaluation has contributed to this stagnation, with the exchange rate shifting from ₦1 to $1 in the past to around ₦1,400 to a dollar today.

Duke also linked Nigeria's security challenges, including Boko Haram insurgency and banditry, to economic hardship, asserting that the government's primary role is to foster a productive environment for citizens. He criticized the reliance on foreign reserves as a measure of economic progress, advocating for a focus on employment and productivity.
