Nigeria Advocates for Fair Global Tax System at UN

Nigeria, along with other countries, called for a fairer global tax system during the fifth session of negotiations on the UN Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation, held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from August 3 to 13. Dr. Dereje Alemayehu, Executive Coordinator of the Global Alliance for Tax Justice (GATJ), stated that the session showed increasing support for a tax system that ensures equitable distribution of taxing rights, effective taxation of wealthy individuals and corporations, and enhanced transparency.

The first week focused on the zero draft of the Framework Convention, while the second week addressed early protocols concerning digital services taxation and tax dispute resolution. The GATJ emphasized the need for ambitious proposals to tackle global tax system challenges and announced that the next round of negotiations will occur in Nairobi from November 30 to December 11, with member states expected to submit comments on the draft text prior to the meeting.
