Nigeria Police and ICAN Partner on Financial Crimes

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, met with Hajia Queensley Sofuratu Seghosime, President and Chairman of Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), along with a delegation at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. The meeting aimed to strengthen collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and ICAN, focusing on the increasing complexity of financial and economic crimes.

CSP Anietie Iniedu, the Force Public Relations Officer, stated that ICAN proposed structured collaboration, including forensic accounting certification programs for police investigators, specialized training for detectives, and opportunities for Police Academy cadets to obtain the Accounting Technician Scheme for West Africa (ATSWA) certification. The discussions also included developing a dedicated Police-ICAN response mechanism for high-profile financial fraud cases.

IGP Disu welcomed the partnership and suggested a joint awareness campaign to educate businesses and SMEs on fraud prevention and responsible financial practices, emphasizing the NPF's commitment to enhancing its capacity to investigate and prosecute financial crimes.
