Nigeria Police Forfeits N2bn Assets in Landmark Ruling

On May 14, 2026, Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja granted a permanent forfeiture order for assets valued at over N2 billion, which belonged to a member of the financial sector and accomplice Opeyemi Yetund. The forfeited assets include bank accounts, digital wallets, vehicles, and real estate located in Lagos, Osun, Delta, and the Federal Capital Territory.

The principal suspect is currently in remand at Suleja Correctional Custody facing charges of fraud and money laundering. Additionally, on May 13, 2026, Justice Bello Kawu dismissed a N100 million fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by American-based suspect David Imol Averehi against the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector General of Police, stating that the court cannot obstruct statutory police duties to shield individuals engaged in criminal conduct.
