Nigeria Proposes World Agritourism Centre for Food Security

Nigeria is intensifying efforts to establish itself as a global leader in agritourism, proposing the creation of a World Agritourism Centre (WAC) as a flagship initiative championed by the World Agritour Organisation (WAO). This project is designed to transform agriculture into a major driver of economic growth, attract investment, and develop climate-resilient agro-industrialization across Africa and beyond.

The proposal reflects a long-term vision to create a globally recognized platform integrating agriculture, tourism, and innovative trade for sustainable development. The WAO, led by global advocate Henri Ogboi, aims to establish the centre ahead of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly scheduled for September 2026.

The initiative received renewed attention following a groundbreaking ceremony held in February 2025 in the Orifa Itakpa Obi Local Government Area of Benue State. The centre is expected to occupy 16,000 hectares and serve as a permanent international platform connecting governments, investors, and stakeholders to advance food security and climate-smart agriculture.
