Nigeria Retains Low Corruption Score in 2025 Index, Shows Progress in Asset Recovery Efforts

Nigeria has retained a low score in the 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index, standing at 26 out of 100, according to CISLAC (Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre). The country's ranking has slipped from 140th in 2024 to 142nd in 2025, reflecting persistent public perceptions of widespread corruption hindering governance reforms.

Despite this, positive trends have been noted in Nigeria's fight against corruption, with notable achievements in asset recovery efforts. The EFCC (Economic and Financial Crimes Commission) reportedly recovered ₦566 billion and 1,502 properties between October 2023 and September 2025, while the ICPC (Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission) recovered ₦37.44 billion in 2025.

International cooperation in asset recovery, such as the repatriation of assets from the UK Crown Dependencies in January 2026, has also been highlighted. CISLAC emphasized the crucial role of civil society organizations and the media in exposing corruption and promoting accountability as essential pillars of Nigeria's democracy.
