Nigeria and Russia Collaborate on Anti-Corruption Efforts

Nigeria and Russia have initiated discussions to strengthen their collaboration in the fight against corruption, emphasizing knowledge-sharing, institutional reforms, financial investigations, and the recovery of illicit assets. This development arose from the 4th Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria (ACAN) International Diplomatic Dialogue held in Abuja.
ICPC Chairman, Dr Musa Aliyu, stated that Nigeria could gain from international experiences to enhance its anti-corruption framework. He noted that the engagement with Russia would allow Nigeria to study various anti-corruption legislation and enforcement mechanisms.
Igor Ivannikov, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Russian Embassy in Nigeria, presented Russia's anti-corruption framework, which includes income and property declarations, conflict-of-interest controls, and electronic public procurement. He emphasized that while digitalization and risk-based controls are vital, effective oversight is essential.
Ivannikov also highlighted the importance of asset tracing and recovery in combating corruption, proposing closer cooperation between Nigerian and Russian authorities in financial investigations.
