Nigeria Advocates for Domestic Funding in HIV Response

Nigeria has called for stronger domestic funding and broader partnerships to sustain its HIV response due to declining global donor support and increasing financial pressures. This appeal was made by Dr.

Temitope Ilori, Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), at the Nigeria Event during the 26th International AIDS Conference (IAS 2026) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The theme of the conference, “Rethink.

Rebuild. Rise,” aligns with Nigeria’s efforts to enhance its HIV response by building resilient systems.

Ilori noted that the event's theme, “Sustainability: Strengthening Resource Mobilisation for the National HIV Response in Nigeria,” underscores the urgent need for long-term financing for HIV programs. She highlighted that while Nigeria has made significant progress in tackling HIV over the past two decades, the changing global financing landscape necessitates a rethinking of its financing model.

Ilori stressed that sustainability involves building stronger institutions and ensuring maximum impact from available resources. NACA plans to convene a Post-IAS Stakeholders’ Engagement to further these discussions.
