Nigeria Enhances Security and Border Management Efforts

The Nigerian Government is taking steps to strengthen national security and border management as part of efforts to create a safer environment for Nigerians, including those returning from the diaspora. This initiative was communicated during an engagement with Nigerians in Angola, which occurred on the sidelines of the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union in Luanda.

Leah Katung-Babatunde, Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister of Defence, issued a statement on 30 August 2026 regarding the event. Defence Minister General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd) outlined ongoing efforts to enhance the operational capacity of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and partner security agencies, citing regional instability in the Sahel as a contributing factor to Nigeria’s security challenges.

He emphasized the importance of integrating reliable data into national security strategies. The engagement was part of a larger Nigerian delegation led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and included key officials such as Minister of Interior Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and Nigerians in Diaspora Commission CEO Abike Dabiri-Erewa.
