Nigeria Leads UN Finance Committee, Promises Reforms

On September 4, Nigeria assumed the chairmanship of the United Nations General Assembly’s Fifth Committee, which oversees the organization’s finances and administration. Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, took over from Hungary’s Ambassador Zsuzsanna Horváth, who chaired the committee during the 80th session.

Ibrahim was elected to this position on June 2, shortly after beginning his diplomatic assignment. He emphasized that Nigeria would not treat this role as “business as usual,” prioritizing reforms that enhance transparency and accountability in the UN's budget and administration.

The Fifth Committee is crucial as it addresses financial governance, human resources, and institutional efficiency, impacting all UN programs. Ibrahim stated that Nigeria would advocate for a results-oriented financial system, ensuring that expenditures yield tangible benefits for the 193 member states.

He stressed the importance of justifying fund utilization and aligning administrative structures with member states' priorities.
