Nigeria Targets 2M MT Sugar Output with Specialist Graduates

Nigeria is targeting an annual sugar production of two million metric tons as the Nigeria Sugar Development Council (NSDC) graduates its first cohort of specialists from its flagship residential capacity-building program. This program, held at the Nigeria Sugar Institute (NSI) in Ilorin, is designed to develop a highly skilled workforce capable of improving efficiency across Nigeria's sugar value chain.

Kamar Bakrin, the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of NSDC, stated that the future of Nigeria's sugar industry relies on building professional technical expertise to enhance farm productivity and factory efficiency. The National Sugar Master Plan 2.0 emphasizes strengthening critical areas such as land preparation, irrigation, high-yield seed cane production, and factory operations to transform the sector sustainably and reduce dependence on sugar imports.
