Nigeria Imports N8bn Sorbitol, Aims for Local Production

In 2023, Nigeria imported 7,700 metric tons of sorbitol valued at approximately N8 billion, underscoring the country's reliance on foreign suppliers for sweeteners. Despite a projected demand of 2.15 million metric tons by 2026, local production capacity remains significantly low at 53,000 metric tons, meeting only about 2.5% of national demand.

The report titled "NCIA Insight: Unlocking Cassava's Industrial Value" indicates that Nigeria, as the world's largest cassava producer, has a clear opportunity to produce sorbitol locally to meet demand across multiple industries. The NCIA identified that few local companies are addressing the supply gap, with the first cassava-based sorbitol plant commissioned in Iseyin, Oyo State, in August 2022, capable of producing 25 tons per day.

The process involves converting cassava roots into industrial-grade sorbitol through various stages, including starch extraction and purification, which are crucial for maximizing yield and profitability.
