Nigeria to Compete in 2026 World Fencing Championship

Nigeria is set to compete in the 2026 World Fencing Championship, scheduled to take place in Hong Kong from July 22 to July 30. The Nigeria Fencing Federation confirmed the country's participation in a statement issued on Sunday.

This championship is expected to feature around 1,000 elite fencers from 100 countries, making it one of the largest sporting events outside the Olympic Games. Eighteen-year-old Inkosi Brou will lead Nigeria's team, competing in the men's sabre event after achieving a quarter-final finish at the African Fencing Championship in Abidjan.

He will be joined by Oluwafolayemi Akinyosoy, ranked 120th globally, and Olen Phoenix Zaoku, who is the youngest competitor at 16 years old, ranked 507th. Additionally, 17-year-old Adebodunrin Thoma will represent Nigeria in the women's épée category, competing against 174 other athletes.

Coach Ibrahim Alogba emphasized the significance of this championship as a milestone for the development of fencing in Nigeria.
