Nigeria Selects Boxing Team for 2026 Commonwealth Games

Nigeria has unveiled a 10-member boxing team for the 2026 Commonwealth Games after a four-day open trial held at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos. The trials, organized by the Nigeria Boxing Federation, attracted 148 fighters, comprising 121 men and 27 women competing across 10 weight divisions.

Standout performances included UK-based fighter Patricia Mbata, who won gold in the women's 70kg division, securing her place on the national team. Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua sent a video message encouraging female boxers to qualify.

The selected boxers include Udoett Happi (51kg), Ajishola Kadijat (57kg), Sodip Damilola (65kg), Edoka Celestin (70kg) for women, and Ogunremi Michael (55kg), Wahab Abdurrahman (65kg), Folli Hassan (70kg), Daniel Joshua (80kg), and Anigbodo Kenneth (90kg) for men. Technical Director Babatunde Laguda praised the athletes and officials for their dedication during the trials.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place from July 24 to August 1 in Glasgow, featuring 14 boxing events.
