Nigeria's Nworgu Wins Gold at Commonwealth Games

Nigeria achieved a significant milestone at the Commonwealth Games with Nworgu winning the gold medal in the women’s Lightweight para-weightlifting event, scoring a record 119 points. This victory marks her as the first female to win a medal at the 2026 Games and the first gold medalist for Nigeria in Glasgow.

Nworgu, aged 23, broke the competition’s weight record twice, initially lifting 118kg for a score of 114.1 points, surpassing Zoe Newson's previous record of 102.2 points. She then improved her score with a lift of 123kg.

Additionally, Roland Ezuruike, aged 50, won Nigeria's first medal at the Games, securing silver in the men’s lightweight para-powerlifting event with a lift of 187kg. Ezuruike was tied for gold with England’s Mike Swan but could not complete his final lift.

Nigeria currently leads the Commonwealth medals table with three medals and is competing in 10 sporting events from July 23 to August 2.
