Nworgu Claims Gold at Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

Esther Nworgu won gold in the Women’s Lightweight Para Powerlifting event at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, achieving a Games record lift of 119.0kg. She expressed that winning gold meant everything to her and credited the National Sports Commission for their support in creating a conducive environment for Team Nigeria.

Nworgu highlighted the months of preparation and the Commission's backing as key to her success. She praised her teammate, Esther Oyema, who won silver in the same event, for motivating younger Nigerian para powerlifters.

Nworgu noted that the celebration began when the Nigerian flag was raised and the national anthem played. She also thanked the leadership of the National Sports Commission, specifically chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and director general Bukola Olopade, for their support and for promptly rewarding medal-winning athletes, as she received her $5,000 reward immediately after her victory.

Nworgu’s gold and Oyema’s silver contributed to a successful opening day for Team Nigeria.
