Nigerian Army Deploys Troops to Benin for Security Operations

The Nigerian Army has announced the deployment of troops to the Benin Republic as part of regional security operations aimed at combating terrorism and transnational crime across West Africa. This announcement was made by Chief of Army Staff Lt.

Gen. Waidi Shaibu during the opening of the Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference 2026 held in Abuja.

Shaibu emphasized the commitment of the Nigerian Army to strengthen intelligence-sharing and strategic partnerships to coordinate security mechanisms designed to deter criminal and terrorist groups. The troop deployment reflects Nigeria's resolve to reinforce regional security architecture and enhance collective responses to emerging threats in the sub-region.

Shaibu also noted that the Army continues to prioritize the modernization of equipment and infrastructure to boost operational efficiency and troop welfare. Initiatives include the construction and renovation of soldier accommodations, improved healthcare delivery, and enhanced skill development for personnel.

The Chief of Army Staff urged participants at the conference to remain innovative in addressing evolving security challenges.
