Nigerian-born Marine Chukwuemeka Oforah dies at sea

Chukwuemeka Oforah, a 21-year-old Lance Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps, tragically died after falling overboard from the USS Iwo Jima in the Caribbean Sea on February 7, 2023.

Following a 72-hour search and rescue operation that failed to locate him, he was declared dead on February 10, 2023. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

The search efforts involved multiple military assets, including five U.S. Navy ships, a rigid hull inflatable boat, and ten aircraft from the Navy and Marine Corps.

Colonel Tom Trimble expressed condolences to Oforah's family, stating that the loss deeply affected the members of the Navy Marine Corps team. Oforah's death is noted as the first known fatality connected to the Southern Spear surveillance military campaign, which targets transnational criminal maritime networks and drug trafficking activities across parts of the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean.

The Southern Spear operation was reportedly launched last year.
