Nigerian Government Closes Ogun Factory Over Safety Risks

The Nigerian government has mandated the immediate closure of the African Refractories factory located along the Ikorodu-Sagamu Expressway in Ogun State. This action, ordered by the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, follows an inspection conducted by the Occupational Safety and Health Department of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.

The inspection revealed unsafe working conditions, particularly concerning exposure to silica dust, which is linked to serious occupational health problems. The factory was found to be in violation of Nigeria's Factory Act, specifically Section 30, which outlines safety measures to protect workers from harmful substances.

The Minister emphasized the necessity of halting operations to safeguard the workforce and prevent further health risks. A joint inspection team has been established to assess the company's compliance with occupational safety and health standards.

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the health and safety of Nigerian workers amid increasing concerns over workplace safety practices in the industrial sector.
