Nigerian Government Files Treason Charges Against Coup Plotters

The Nigerian government has filed a 13-count treason charge against several alleged coup plotters in a federal high court in Abuja. Among the suspects are a retired major general and a retired naval captain, as well as a police inspector and three others.

The charges stem from an investigation conducted by Nigerian security agencies into an alleged conspiracy to violently overthrow President Bola Tinubu's administration. Reports indicate that around 40 suspects have been identified in connection with the alleged coup, which involved the arrest of sixteen military officers and two civilians.

The investigation revealed that two individuals were involved in reconnaissance activities, while two others were accused of inciting civil disobedience to justify the coup. Additionally, five other suspects were implicated in funding activities related to the conspiracy.
