Nigerian Navy Rescues Three Stowaways Off Lagos Coast

On April 19, 2023, the Nigerian Navy successfully intercepted three stowaways aboard the merchant vessel MSC Stella, identified by IMO number 9279988, off the Lagos coastline. The operation was conducted by personnel from the Nigerian Navy ship NN Beecroft, following credible intelligence received at the Western Region Control Centre (WRCC) at 5:05 PM.

The quick response team deployed to Tarkwa Bay managed to rescue the suspects approximately five nautical miles from the coast. Preliminary investigations revealed that the stowaways had illegally boarded the vessel on April 17, 2023, while it was berthed at Tin Island Port, Lagos.

The individuals were identified as Aguru Michael, 27, from the Benin Republic, and Kentob Peter, 22, from Delta State, Nigeria. They reportedly intended to stow away to Europe.

The Nigerian Navy emphasized its commitment to maritime safety and security, highlighting previous successful search and rescue missions. The suspects are currently in custody at NN Beecroft undergoing administrative processes in line with existing laws.
