Nigerian Navy Enhances Healthcare for Personnel Welfare

The Nigerian Navy is advancing a comprehensive healthcare reform agenda to strengthen its medical system, enhance personnel welfare, and boost operational readiness. This initiative was a focal point at the 2026 Nigerian Navy Annual Medical Conference held at the Imion Auditorium in Lagos.

Vice Admiral Idi Abba, representing the Chief of Naval Staff, emphasized that quality healthcare is crucial for national security and operational effectiveness. The conference approved strategies to build a resilient healthcare system capable of meeting the evolving needs of naval personnel and their families.

Key investments include the construction of the Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital in Abuja and the expansion of the Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital in Ojo, Lagos, which will improve access to specialist healthcare services. The Nigerian Navy, marking its 70th anniversary, has made significant progress in healthcare delivery, expanding from two modest sickbays in 1963 to a robust network of hospitals and medical centers.

The conference also addressed the need for mental health support and innovative funding models to sustain world-class healthcare delivery.
