Nigerian Navy Enhances Maritime Security for 70th Anniversary

The Nigerian Navy, under the leadership of Rear Admiral Akinola Oladun, has pledged to enhance maritime security as it prepares for its 70th anniversary celebrations from May 21 to June 4, 2026. The Navy is set to confront asymmetric threats associated with fourth-generation warfare and address emerging fifth-generation security challenges through technological integration and manpower development.

The anniversary will feature a series of activities, including a special prayer, sports competitions, and community outreach projects. A significant highlight will be an international fleet review on June 1, 2026, at Eko Atlantic Waterfront, where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will review naval formations and commission three vessels.

The Nigerian Navy's historical evolution began on June 1, 1956, and has since developed elite forces capable of projecting power across the Gulf of Guinea and the wider West African maritime space. The Navy's contributions to international peacekeeping missions, including support for UN operations, were also noted, alongside its current status as one of Africa's strongest naval fleets.
