Nigerian Ports Achieve 24.8% Growth in Cargo Throughput

The Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) reported a significant 24.8% growth in cargo throughput, increasing from approximately 103.6 million metric tons in 2024 to 129.3 million metric tons in 2025. Dr.

Abubakar Dantsoho, Managing Director of NPA, highlighted this growth as a major milestone in Nigeria's maritime history, strengthening the country's competitive position in global trade. The report indicated that exports accounted for 39.0% of total cargo throughput, while inward traffic represented 59.2%.

Notably, container cargo saw a 25.7% increase, surpassing 2.1 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). Lekki Port emerged as the leading port, handling 40.6% of the nation's total cargo throughput.

The report also noted a 205.8% increase in transship containers, positioning Nigeria as a strategic regional logistics hub. Future growth is expected to be driven by government-approved port modernization programs aimed at enhancing infrastructure and operational efficiency.
