Nigerian Correctional Service Joins Global Chess Competition

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) participated in the 6th International Chess for Freedom Competition for the first time, joining inmates from England, Romania, North Macedonia, Albania, Belgium, and Latvia. The Nigerian leg of the competition took place at the Bidemi Oladipupo IT Hub within the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kirikiri.
This initiative was announced by the Lagos State Command of the NCoS through a statement signed by Superintendent of Corrections Joseph Osho. The participation was facilitated by a collaboration between Anchor Heritage Initiative and Chess in School, organizations focused on expanding educational access and promoting strategic thinking among prison populations.
The NCoS described this debut as a significant step in its correctional reform agenda, emphasizing the role of custodial centres in developing talent and preparing inmates for reintegration into society. The service underscored that incarceration should extend beyond physical confinement, allowing inmates to acquire skills and undergo personal transformation.
