Nigerians Support Taxes if Looters Are Held Accountable

Ugezu J. Ugezu, a Nollywood filmmaker, expressed in a video posted on Facebook that Nigerians are not resistant to paying taxes but are fearful of tax looters.

He articulated that if citizens could see the positive impact of their tax contributions on national development, they would be more willing to pay. Ugezu criticized the government's approach to tax legislation, stating that discussions about new tax laws should be accompanied by accountability regarding the misappropriation of public funds.

He highlighted that the average Nigerian is apprehensive about paying taxes due to the history of corruption and theft of public resources. Ugezu called for a legal system that punishes those who steal government money, asserting that visible consequences for looters would foster a more favorable attitude towards tax compliance among citizens.

He concluded that transparency in the use of tax revenues would lead to greater public willingness to fulfill tax obligations.
